Council of Elders Meeting Report

Tuesday, July 2, 2002 - Teleconference

A quorum of the Council of Elders met by teleconference today to discuss appointing two new members for the Christ-centered Servant Leadership task force, to determine members of the various Council committees, and to discuss a personnel issue (executive session). Aaron Dean was not able to participate, due to a business trip, and Gary Antion needed to drop-off before the teleconference concluded to teach an Ambassador Bible Center class.

Christ-Centered Servant Leadership Task-Force

Because of his many responsibilities and recent move, Dick Thompson asked to drop off of the Christ-centered Servant Leadership task force. The Council gave its approval for Council chairman Clyde Kilough to contact two specific individuals to see if they were willing to serve on this task force.

Committees of the Council

As of July 1, the Council has two new members – Jim Franks and Doug Horchak. Because of these changes, the Council took the opportunity to discuss, change and approve the members of the various Council committees.

By way of reminder, Clyde Kilough first pointed out that Bylaw 8.8.1 requires the Council to approve the members of the committees by a simple majority ballot. He also reminded everyone of the Council resolutions which require each committee to select its chairman by blind ballot.

Leon Walker made the suggestion that since the committees are being reconfigured, that it might be a good time to ballot for the chairmen of all committees, and not just for those committees which have no chairmen at this time. (He stated his desire to step-down as the chairman of the Doctrine Committee.) Gary Antion mentioned that he did not see a real need for this, since there are there are only two new members of the Council (and both of them have served on the Council before). He stated that, in reality, there probably would not be wholesale changes to the committees.

After a few more comments, it was decided that only two committees will need to ballot for chairmen – the Doctrine Committee (due to Leon Walker stepping down as chairman) and the Education/Ministerial Services Committee (the previous chairman is no longer a member of the Council).

After some discussion about the size of each committee, and the preferences of each Council member as to his respective assignments, the quorum of the Council unanimously approved the members of the Council committees.

(* Chairman)

Discussion then turned to the selection of the committee chairmen, and when that should take place. Bob Dick pointed out that standard parliamentary procedure would dictate that the committees should select their chairmen during an officially called meeting of the Council. After various questions and comments were raised, there was general agreement with this. Therefore, during its August meetings, the Council will ask the Doctrine and Education/MS committees to select their respective chairmen.

The Council concluded its teleconference by going into executive session.
